Geropsychiatric Nursing: State of the Future, September 30, 2005 at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. - The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, together with the John A. Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn and the University of Iowa School of Nursing, presents a one-day Conference -- Geropsychiatric Nursing: State of the Future. Commissioned white papers, discussant reports and panel discussions will summarize and disseminate the current state of knowledge in geriatric mental health nursing science, curriculum, and clinical care. In addition, there will be a poster session to showcase and advance successful models of geropsychiatric nursing practice, education, research and dissemination. Abstracts are being solicited for poster sessions only.

RAND/Hartford Center for Interdisciplinary Geriatric Health Care Research Retreat
The Rand/Hartford Center for Interdisciplinary Geriatric Health Care Research sponsored an all day retreat on "Changing the Trajectory of Serious and Chronic Illness In Older Adults: An Interdisciplinary Venue to Advance the Science and Health Care of Older Adults" on June 2nd Logan Hall, Terrace Room, University of Pennsylvania.  The retreat provided an excellent opportunity to participate in clinical sciences, information & communication, and health care management & economic panel sessions lead by nursing, medicine, and social work experts.

New LIFE Director of Nursing Practice.
We are extremely pleased to announce Mary Austin, MSN, RN, NHA as the new LIFE Director of Nursing Practice! Mary comes to LIFE with over 20 years of professional nursing experience, and brings a wealth of knowledge in quality and operations management. She most recently served as President of Senior Pathways, Inc., a long-term care consultation company focusing on quality improvement, case management, evaluation and educational programs. Mary has been a Senior Consultant with the Penn Nursing Consultation Service since 1996. Prior to these appointments she served as Chief Operating Officer for Courtland Health Care, Inc. and was Director of Nursing and Director of Quality Assurance for The New Ralston House. Mary holds a Master of Science in Nursing from Villanova University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Neumann College. She is also a Registered Nurse and is licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator and Personal Care Home Administrator. Mary will start at LIFE on June 22nd. Please join us in welcoming Mary to her new position at LIFE!

Dean Meleis Announces Norma Lang's Retirement
Dr. Norma M. Lang, the Lillian S. Brunner Professor of Medical Surgical Nursing; and Dean Emeritus of Nursing  (1992-2000) will be retiring from the standing faculty at Penn Nursing as of June 30, 2005.  She is former Dean and Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing (1980-1992).  She is a Senior Research Fellow in the Annenberg Center for Public Policy and a Senior Fellow in the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics.  She directs the Office of International Programs and the WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership.

Dr. Mary Naylor - The Commonwealth Fund, Program on Health Care Quality Improvement - a grant in support of coordinating care between hospital and home: translating research into practice, phase 2. Dr. Julie Sochalski - The Commonwealth Fund, Program on Medicare's Future - a grant in support of improving quality and efficiency: a coordinated care benefit for Medicare beneficiaries with heart failure. Dr. Norma Cuellar - Christian R. & Mary F. Lindback Foundation, Minority Junior Faculty Award - a grant in support of her project on the use of alternative medicine for the sleep disorder Restless Leg Syndrome.

Penn Nursing students, Salimah Meghani, Lusine Poghosyan, Maria Lara and Elyssa Vasas, launched a new student organization, the International Student Organization (ISO). Dr. Beth Ann Swan is ISO's faculty mentor. ISO will serve both social and educational functions as foreign students will have a place to meet other international students and all Penn Nursing students will benefit from learning about each others cultures. Dean Afaf Meleis, Dr. Seboni (2005 International Scholar in Residence from Botswana), Dr. Neville Strumpf and many other Penn faculty participated in the well-attended Kick-Off event.

2005 PILOT STUDY ANNOUNCEMENT
IOA is pleased to partner with the School of Nursing (SON) to offer a pilot grant opportunity, provided by joint funding from the IOA and SON to support a pilot study led by a SON faculty member. The University of Pennsylvania Institute on Aging (IOA) will also fund 3 multidisciplinary pilot projects on biomedical, epidemiological, behavioral or health services research in basic science or clinical areas in aging, led by a School of Medicine faculty member. The January issue of the American Journal of Nursing has awarded "Academic Nursing Practice: Helping to Shape the Future of Healthcare," authored by Drs. Lois Evans and Norma Lang, the Book of the Year award in the Nursing Education and Continuing Education category.

Dr. Strumpf's advancement of the science of nursing in the field of gerontology and her mentorship of scholars around the world embraces the characteristics of this very special recognition. Dr. Strumpf will present her work at the Claire M. Fagin Distinguished Researcher Award event on Thursday, April 14, 12:00-2:00pm , followed by a reception in her honor. Hartford Scholar, Michele C. Balas, coauthors study on errors in patient care
A University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing study, coauthored by Michele C. Balas (with Ann E. Rogers and Linda D. Scott), provides the first detailed description of the nature and prevalence of errors by hospital staff nurses... Although the majority of errors and near-errors were medication-related, the nurses also reported a number of procedural, transcription and charting errors.

Sarah Hope Kagan inducted into the American Academy of Nursing
Sarah Kagan was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing during the AAN 31st Annual Meeting and Conference on November 13, 2004 in Washington, D.C. The criteria for selection of Fellows requires evidence of outstanding and broad contributions to nursing and health care, as well as evidence of strong potential for continuing influence on nursing practice and health policy aimed at improving the health of the American people. Each nominee was sponsored for membership by two current AAN Fellows.

Sarah Kagan Awarded 2004 Carol Hogue Distinguished Lectureship
Sarah Kagan, PhD, RN, was "calling on nurses to take up leadership to reenvision, reimagine and act in a different way to understand what it is to be old in our society.” Kagan's 2004 Carol Hogue Distinguished Lecture, titled “What’s Wrong with This Picture? Nurses’ Influence on Being Old and Ill in America,” was part of a new visiting professorship in geriatric nursing program established by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University schools of nursing. >>> more

Dr. Buhler-Wilkerson Honored by AAN and to be Featured on NBC
Dr. Karen Buhler-Wilkerson and the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing have won a national media award from the American Academy of Nursing for their work with the RN exhibit on the history of the nursing uniform.
Dr. Buhler-Wilkerson and doctoral candidate Lynn Houweling will also be featured on NBC's Nitely News with Tom Brokaw. They have completed taped interviews on the RN badge and the need for a new nursing identity. The piece is expected to air following the elections.
Dr. Buhler-Wilkerson has twice received the Lavinia L. Dock Award for Exemplary Historical Research and Writing from the American Association for the History of Nursing, as well as the Agnes Dillon Randolph Award for Significant Contributions to the Field of Nursing History from the Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Karen Buhler-Wilkerson is the author of No Place Like Home: A History of Nursing and Home Care in the United States, Johns Hopkins University Press (2001). She has been a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing since 1989.

Penn Nursing at 2004 GSA (Washington, DC)
Penn Nursing again sent a large contingent to the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). These geroscholars presented an impressive number of papers and posters to disseminate their latest research. GSA is the oldest and largest national multidisciplinary scientific organization devoted to the advancement of gerontological research.

Nursing program lets elderly live at home longer
"People want to remain in their homes," Associate Nursing Dean for Practice and Community Affairs Eileen Sullivan-Marx said. LIFE is a member program of the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly and is owned and operated by Penn's School of Nursing, which provides Penn Nursing and Social Work students with an opportunity to gain clinical experience in a real-life setting.

NORMA CUELLAR Named Post-Doctoral Scholar in Gerontological Nursing. The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, part of the New York University Division of Nursing, has named Norma Cuellar, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, as a Scholar in its 2004 Geriatric Nursing Research Scholars Program. Dr. Cuellar was selected for having conducted significant research in gerontologic nursing and for her strong leadership potential.

Valerie Cotter, MSN, CRNP, FAANP
, Director, Adult Health and Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Programs, School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner, Memory Disorders Clinic, and Education Director, Alzheimer's Disease Center, University of Pennsylvania, presented “Restraint Free Care in Older Adults with Dementia” while a Visiting Scholar at Aomori University of Health and Welfare in Aomori, Japan on July 21-28, 2004. Her presentation is available online in English and Japanese. Ms. Cotter also gave this lecture at Keio University Hospital, Tokyo where she was hosted by Yukiko Takaya Lau (Penn GNP graduate 1996 and Instructor, Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, Keio University) and the Keio Medical Society.

The other event is a Community Orientation to be held at PCA on July 20, 2004. It is geared toward Social Workers and Nurses; the training and information session will provide a detailed breakdown of PCA's Care at Home programs and services, and will also highlight specific areas within PCA
Community Living Option's Department: Nursing Home Transition program and Long Term Care's: Safety and Medication use in the elderly.

Both events are sponsored by PCA, however, the Nursing contact hours and Continuing Education Credits are being awarded by the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work and the School of Nursing.

LIFE MEMBERS' ART WORK SELECTED for NATIONAL EXHIBIT
The American Art Therapy Association has accepted 10 pieces created by members of LIFE, a School of Nursing practice serving frail elders, for exhibition in Washington June 13-20.

Carol Johnson, art therapist at LIFE, has been notified that art works submitted by LIFE members have been selected for a national exhibit "Art in the Senate: Exhibition of Art by Older Americans" sponsored by the American Art Therapy Association. The exhibit took place at the Russell State Rotunda at the Capitol in Washington, DC, June 13-20, 2004. This is very exciting for the LIFE members who participated in this event as part of "Aging Well, Living Well" for Older Americans Month in May. Congratulations to Carol and all the artists!

Dr. Eileen Sullivan-Marx has been named the Shearer Endowed Term Chair for Healthy Community Practices. This chair, funded by a generous gift from Miriam Stirl in memory of her mother Helen M. It was named to honor Dr. Lowery who was instrumental in the lives of so many doctoral students at Penn. Dr. Sarah Hope Kagan, the Doris R.
