PRACTICE TOOLS Quality Assurance and Improvement Systems (QA&IS)
Restraint use and compliance with federal regulations may be monitored as a quality assurance activity. Where there is deviation from an acceptable threshold of compliance, the process of seeking improvement should include problem-solving techniques, such as depicted in Quality Assurance and Improvement Systems.

Sample Activity Schedule (3_SampleSchedule.htm)

Residents with similar functional levels can be clustered together in direct care assignments to facilitate implementing a structured program plan. Although the sample schedules look similar they are individualized to each group's cognitive level.

Subjective Experience of Being Restrained (SEBR)
The Subjective Experience of Being Restrained (SEBR) is a structured interview guide used with patients, first in a hospital study (Strumpf & Evans, 1988) and then in a subsequent nursing home study (Evans & Strumpf, 1987; Strumpf et. al., 1997). This instrument was used to guide the interview, but an open-ended free flowing discussion was sought with the subject; the interviews were audiotaped and transcribed for content analysis.
