Scholarship Programs

 


Penn's School of Nursing has been designated by the John A. Hartford Foundation as a recipient of outstanding scholarship program opportunities in gerontological nursing. Awards range from scholarships for geriatric advanced practice nurses (APN) to Pre-doctoral, Post-doctoral studies. An MBA/Administrative scholarship is also offered for the joint program at Penn Nursing and the Wharton School. A Tyson Scholarship for research in gerontology is also available for undergraduate students.

Scholarship Programs in Geriatric Nursing

The John A. Hartford Foundation aims to strengthen gerontological nursing capacity in academic and clinical settings by providing the following scholarship opportunities to qualified candidates:
II. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) administers the Geriatric Nursing Education Project, another Hartford Foundation program. The Creating Careers in Geriatric Advanced Placement Nursing Initiative provides scholarship monies to schools of nursing to expand opportunities for Master's nursing students to choose a career in geriatric advanced practice nursing.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

I. Creating Careers in Geriatric Advanced Practice Nursing

This competitive scholarship fund is available to one eligible candidate per year to provide financial assistance toward supporting full-time pursuit of a Master's degree in the Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (GNP) Program. Please contact the School of Nursing's Financial Aid Office to apply for this scholarship prior to the 3/15/2007 deadline.
Prior to applying, please note the following requirements. Scholarship recipients must agree to:
1.
Engage in full-time study;
2.
Obtain national certification as a geriatric nurse practitioner upon graduation;
3.
Commit to a nursing career demonstrating leadership and focused on the care of the older adult;
4.
Provide ongoing evidence of successful progression through the designated program in order to receive continued funding;
5.
Attend one designated scientific meeting of the Gerontological Society of America and a Leadership Program sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation/American Association of Colleges of Nursing;
6.
Participate in the scholarship evaluation plan.



Scholarship applications for the academic year 2007/2008

Candidates are required to submit a letter of intent to apply for this scholarship support and a brief 1-2 page essay describing the candidate's interest in a career in geriatric advanced practice nursing, current leadership skills and abilities, and anticipated career goals. Scholarships are awarded based on a review of each application and an interview with selected candidates conducted by faculty members of the Selection Committee. For awards beginning in May 2007, the application with a letter of intent and essay must be received by the Financial Aid Office at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, 420 Guardian Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6096 by no later than March 15, 2007. HARTFORD SCHOLARS IN GERIATRIC NURSING

The John A. Hartford Foundation’s Board of Trustees recently granted an additional $3 million to the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholar Program. The newly granted funds will provide up to $100,000 in Fellowship and Scholarship to selected nurse candidates. Applications are now available on the program’s website; www.geriatricnursing.org.
