Cheryl Ann Monturo

"Two years ago many facets of my career began to converge incorporating my clinical experience in nutrition support and bioethics into a program of research. In the past year the doctoral program provided an exciting environment in which I expanded my ideas and narrowed my focus to a more defined area of research."

Cheryl Ann Monturo, PhD, MBe, APRN , BC
Pre-doctoral Hartford Scholar, 2002

FACULTY MENTOR

Dr. Neville Strumpf is widely recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of gerontology. Although Dr. Strumpf is probably best known for her work with her colleague, Dr. Lois Evans, on the elimination of physical restraints in nursing homes and hospitals, her remarkable career as ground-breaking researcher, innovative teacher, caring mentor, as well as top administrator, is unmatched.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Monturo's early career focused on the provision of artificial nutrition for adult patients, including many aged adults. This led her to develop a growing awareness of and interest in the needs of the geriatric population in relation to end-of-life issues and palliative care. She frequently utilized her nursing skills to provide individual counseling to clients, families, and colleagues concerning the psychosocial impact of delivery or withdrawal of artificial nutrition. More recently, she played an active role in geriatric oncology research at Penn's School of Nursing as an intervention Advance Practice Nurse, site coordinator, and project manager in three research projects.

Dr. Monturo received a doctorate in Nursing and a Master of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. Her dissertation focused on the meaning of food and values and beliefs regarding artificial nutrition at end-of-life in aging veterans. Results of this project may reveal further information concerning the linguistic confusion and emotional responses to artificial nutrition, clearly evident in the recent case of Ms. Terri Schiavo. Adequate teaching strategies concerning artificial nutrition are essential to providing compassionate, well-informed, palliative and end-of-life care.
