Janice B. Foust

"As it is now, older adults and their families often bear the burden of managing new and complex medication regimens after hospitalizations. Innovative and interdisciplinary strategies may improve post-hospital discharge medication safety and health outcomes."

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr. Janice Foust’s research focuses on discharge planning and transitional care issues of older adults. This research is based on her longstanding commitment to discharge planning and assisting patients and families during the transition home from the hospital. Janice has held positions within hospital and homecare settings, which has given her a breadth of experience to understand the complexities and significant challenges older adults face after being discharged home from the hospital. Janice’s commitment to transitional care of older adults stems from her clinical and research experience as a transitional care advanced practice nurse, as a clinical director within an academic health system, and more recently as a clinical faculty member.

Dr. Foust’s program of research, “Promoting post-hospital discharge medication safety for older adults”, seeks to address an important issue that has clinical as well as policy implications. Through the John A. Hartford Foundation Scholarship, she will examine factors contributing to post-hospital discharge medication errors as well as potential targets to promote post-hospital discharge medication safety for older adults. She will work in collaboration with Penn’s Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence, Penn’s School of Nursing as well as New England resources (e.g. New Hampshire Institute for Health Policy and Practice and Institute for Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, which is an affiliate of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center).

Dr. Foust is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Hampshire, Department of Nursing. She primarily works with undergraduate students in both classroom and clinical settings. She has also served as a faculty member on graduate students’ thesis committees.
