My presentation is on Restraint Free Care in Older Adults with Dementia, a topic that I’ve had considerable experience with as a nurse educator in Penn’s Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program and as a nurse practitioner caring for older adults with dementia. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing initiated the research agenda over 20 years ago to address this critical problem in health care. This work by Dr’s Neville Strumpf and Lois Evans and many others at our School of Nursing has led to restraint reduction and elimination and improved the quality of life for so many older adults. There is still much work to be done and I hope that you take away information or ideas on ways to develop research, education or practice initiatives to promote restraint free care in older adults with dementia.
