Neville
Strumpf, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Lois Evans, DNSc, FAAN
recently visited Brigham
and Women's Hospital (BWH)
as the 2003 Frances Donovan Nurse Scholars, a program
supported by the Friends of BWH. Sponsored by the
Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice, Drs.
Strumpf and Evans presented on two lecture topics:
"Debunking the Myth of Restraint Use"
and "Restraint-Free Care for Hospitalized Elders."
They are leaders in promoting restraint-free care
and wrote the book Restraint-Free Care: Individualized
Approaches to Frail Elders.

Strumpf, RN, PhD were selected by the Center for
Excellence in Nursing Practice at Brigham and Women's
Hospital as the 2003
Frances Donovan Nurse Scholars.
During their recent visit to Boston, Drs. Evans and
Strumpf presented their work on patient safety issues
in a variety of forums and at several Partners HealthCare
System institutions inclusive of Dana Farber Cancer
Institute, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, the
MGH Institute for Health Professions, Massachusetts
General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Their
visit culminated with the presentation of their
research on Restraint
Free Care for Hospitalized Elders at combined
Nursing and Medical Grand Rounds
events at both Massachusetts General and Brigham
and Women's Hospitals. The combined grand rounds
event was the first time such a forum was utilized
at Massachusetts General. And on the evening of
February 27th, the Boston gerontology and academic
communities came together to recognize and thank
Lois Evans and Neville Strumpf at a gala dinner
held in their honor, and hosted by the Center
for Excellence in Nursing Practice.
