PATIENT SAFETY CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 17TH & 18TH, 2011

Creating a Safe Clinical Communications Culture:
Tools, Technology & Talk

Poor and incomplete communication is deadly! New technology designed for efficiency, and the development of “safety tools” influence and sometimes dictates how patient information is relayed causing a communication breakdown amongst colleagues. The purpose of this year’s conference is to bring to light the need for a balance of technology and crucial conversations between healthcare professionals to create a safe communications culture that promotes patient safety, ensures quality of care and possibly save lives.

The Silent Treatment: Why Safety Tools and Checklists Aren’t Enough to Save Lives identifies seven concerns that often go undiscussed and contribute to avoidable medical errors.  Kevin Brown, a master certified trainer in Crucial Conversations will introduce and teach crucial skills for organizational effectiveness.  A panel presentation moderated by Dr. Victoria Rich will delve into the current clinical communications climate and how to implement crucial conversations for patient safety.  A presentation not to be missed by Dr. Bernadette Melnyk, Dean of Nursing and Associate Vice President for Health Promotion at The Ohio State University relates to strategies for success to sustain healthcare quality and safety through teamwork. Dr. Melnyks’ brief stint with the “Blue Angels” is a remarkable story for her to tell. Presentations by Dr. James Cato on the effectiveness of the communication and the electronic medical record, and Dr. Kathleen Burke use of “smart phones” in clinical communication will prove to be informative and enlightening.  Additional presentations will be highlighted from the call for abstracts.  A poster session will add depth to the learning experience.

.
