Crossing the Digital Divide
Thursday September 25, 2008
1:00-5:00PM
This interactive pre-conference features faculty from the Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University. Since 1994, the CHNM has used digital media and computer technology to create exciting approaches to historical research and teaching. CHNM faculty will demonstrate how new technologies and internet resources can enrich historical scholarship and bring our nursing history stories to broader audiences. The pre-conference will feature:
an introduction to online research
digital research and data management strategies available through Zotero (www.zotero.com)
online archiving and oral history gathering
strategies that smaller institutions or individual scholars can use to create online exhibitions using Omeka (www.omeka.org)
the basics of ECHO (Exploring and Collecting History Online), a powerful portal to over 5000 websites concerning the history of science, technology, industry, and health care
This pre-conference also provides “hands-on” experiences. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring laptops as internet access is available. The pre-conference can only accommodate fifty participants. Therefore, pre-registration is required.
