Closing the Revolving Door of Hospital Readmissions

One in five elderly patients discharged from a hospital is readmitted within a month.  Penn Nursing researchers recently reviewed existing programs aimed at addressing this issue in order to determine what works, for whom and for how long.  They discovered “a robust body of evidence” that transitional care can improve health outcomes and reduce hospital readmissions.  Their paper published in the current edition of Health Affairs highlights a range of solutions to reduce hospitalizations and costs.  Transitional care refers to the provision of care coordination and continuity as a patient moves between health care practitioners and settings.

Safe Sex: Can Abstinence Education Work?

Proponents of abstinence-only education argue that comprehensive education encourages premarital sexual activity, while critics argue that abstinence-only education constitutes religious interference in education, distorts information about contraceptive methods, and does not provide adequate information to protect young people.  Join Penn Nursing faculty member, Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott, and her husband, Dr. John Jemmott, for a look at the science behind this debate.   This Alumni Weekend lecture will feature the Jemmotts’ recently published study in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine showing that an abstinence-only intervention presented to a group of inner-city pre-teens was more successful in delaying the onset of sexual activity than a program that taught general health.

Time is Running Out!

Join Penn Nursing alumni, students, parents, staff and friends in making a gift to the Annual Fund.  Your combined gifts can help us to reach our goal of $325,000, which will provide immediate support to students.  Time is running out for the 2010 – 2011 Annual Giving Campaign and we need more than $90,000 to reach our goal.  Your gift of any size, combined with the gifts of others, will have a tremendous impact on the School.

You have until June 30th to help put us over the top.  If you have already made a gift, please consider an additional contribution this year.  If you have not yet made your gift, please consider increasing your Annual Giving contribution, doubling your last gift, or giving for the first time.  Remember, you can make a difference.
