The HUP Nurses Alumni Association
The HUP Nurses Alumni Association embodies the legacy of excellence of nursing education at Penn. In 1886, the newly established training school at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) put the University at the forefront of nursing leadership where it remains today. Since 1887, Mary J. Burns, the first graduate, has been followed by many distinguished alumni including Theresa I. Lynch, a 1920 graduate, who founded and served as the first dean of the current School of Nursing.
From 1886-1978, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania educated 5,000 nurses. HUP alumni continue this rich tradition as educators, clinicians and administrators who elevate the quality of care for each and every patient.
