Penn Nursing Noteworthy Achievements
a school of "Firsts" at our Nation's First University
- First Ivy League institution to offer
three levels of nursing education, bachelors, masters, and doctoral.
- First
nursing school in the country to have a privately funded Center for Nursing
Research.
- First School of Nursing in the United
States to own and operate a PACE Program (Program of All-inclusive
Care for the Elderly), and the only PACE Provider in the United
States sponsored by an academic institution.
- First school at the
University of Pennsylvania and one of the First
schools of nursing in North America to be named a World Health Organization
Collaborating Center.
- First program at the
University of Pennsylvania to make use of videoconferencing technology.
- First School within the
University of Pennsylvania to use IP Net Meeting live videoconferencing for a
Master's Distance Learning Program
- Graduated the First Distance
Learning Nurse-Midwives from Penn as well as graduating the First
Masters' Level students using videoconferencing as a medium for distance
learning
- First and only Distance
Learning Master's Program in Pediatric Nurse Oncology for Nurse Practitioners
in conjunction with St. Jude's Research Hospital, established by Dr.Janet
Deatrick.
- Dr. Margaret Cotroneo conducted the First
international videoconferencing course for credit with the University of
Dortmand in Germany in 1996.
- Among Master's programs, specifically, Adult and Gerontology Nurse
Practitioner programs, Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing are ranked number
one while Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Administration, and Family and
Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner programs are ranked in the top four nationally.
- Our First
doctoral students: Keiko Kishi was the first graduate of the Doctor of
Nursing Science program which was begun in 1978. She graduated in 1981. The
PhD program was established in 1984.
