MSN FAQs

Are programs offered online?
None of our programs are offered fully online. The exception is the Streamlined Post-Master’s Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP program.
What are the guidelines in terms of recommendations: does it have to be an academic, professional, and employment related recommender?

We strongly recommend that you follow the recommendation format outlined on our website: academic, professional, and employer related recommendations. If you have any questions regarding this, please e-mail or call our admissions office.

If I have begun my application and need to either remove or edit my recommender’s contact information, am I able to?

As long as your recommender has not completed the recommendation online, you will be able to go back and edit their information. If the recommender has submitted their recommendation, you will not be able to edit anything in regards to that person’s contact information. Please note that we only require 3 recommendation letters.

Do I need to submit my GRE scores for the MSN program?

If your cumulative GPA is 3.2 or above, you may qualify for a GRE waiver. You must be a graduate of a BSN program from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale. Post-master’s applicants or applicants with a master’s degree, in a discipline other than nursing, with a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale will also qualify. Eligibility will ultimately be left up to the admissions committee once your application has been submitted.

What will count for the required statistics course?

We only require a standard undergraduate statistics course for our graduate programs.

How much is the total cost of the program I am applying to?

Please refer to our Tuition and Fees page. This part of our web page will break down for you the costs of your program. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to our office.

Are there financial aid options?

For full time MSN programs, full time students may be eligible to receive an endowed scholarship or Penn Nursing grants. Please review our Scholarships and Grants page and take a look at the Graduate Student section of the Student Financial Services site. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to reach out to our financial aid office at financialaid@nursing.upenn.edu  or (215) 898-8191.

Do I need work experience for the program I am applying to?

It depends on the program. Any of our acute care MSN NP programs do require experience in an acute care setting or a setting specific to that program. Please find a list of programs and their minimum work qualifications at this page.

I am an international student. What do I need to do to apply to your MSN program?

You only need to submit a World Education Services (WES)  International Credential Package or a Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Credentials Evaluation Service full education course-by-course report (purpose: Academic) for all transcripts. You must also complete the TOEFL or the IELTS exam, and the scores must be from within the last two years. A minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL is required.
