Graduate Programs Application Requirements

Application Checklist & Instructions
Your application will be complete and considered for admission after submitting the following:

  • Completed Application
    Attach separate sheets if you require additional space for your answers.
  • Application Fee
    A $70 non-refundable application fee must be submitted with your application. Your check or money order should be made payable to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania. An application will be considered incomplete if submitted without the fee.
  • Official Transcripts
    Submit official college transcripts in sealed envelopes from all schools, colleges and universities attended. Transcripts should be mailed to:

  • Essay Questions
    Please complete and submit appropriate essay questions listed on page 7 of the application. Each answer should be two double spaced, type written pages. Please mark your name on all essay pages. Be sure to answer the questions as specifically as possible.  The essays will be evaluated on composition, clarity of thought and ability to respond to all areas requested.
  • Sealed Evaluation Forms
    All applicants must submit three letter of recommendation; one from each source: academic, professional and current employer.
  • Licensure Requirements
    All students must submit a copy of a current, professional nursing license. During enrollment in the School of Nursing, one must also maintain a current nursing license. Please note: Additional state licensure may be required based on clinical placement.  Students are also responsible for adhering to all immunization, CPR and background check requirements upon matriculation.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
    General Test Score is required; GRE scores are valid for five years only!
    Please remember to request that the official test results be sent to the Office of Student Information, School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, Institutional Code Number is  R2911; Department Code Number is 0610. Please note that the GRE results must arrive before the application can be reviewed unless a candidate is eligible for our GRE Waiver Program.  Please visit: www.nursing.upenn.edu/admissions/masters/gre_waiver.asp for details.   • Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) (If Applicable)
    Required only by the Wharton School for the MSN/MBA and PhD/MBA programs. For more information visit http://www.gmac.com/.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    Test scores are valid for two years only!                                                                       
    The TOEFL or IELTS exam is required for all non-native English speaking applicants. Successful graduate study requires fluency in spoken and written English.  Please request the official test results be sent to the Office of Student Information, School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, the TOEFL Institutional Code is 2926-43. Applications will not be reviewed until all test scores have been received.  For more information about the TOEFL, visit www.toefl.org. Deadlines
Master’s Programs: The Master's application is now on a rolling basis and acceptance may be obtained for a fall, spring or summer start on a full or part time basis for most programs. In order to ensure appropriate clinical placement and maximum financial support, candidates interested in admission beginning in the summer or fall semesters should submit a completed application at least two months in advance of the start date for most programs. Students interested in beginning their studies in a spring semester are strongly encouraged to submit a completed application before December 1st. (Students beginning in the spring are eligible to take only non-clinical courses during that first semester).

Please note the following program specifics:
Midwifery and Women’s Health Care applicants:
The full time sequence for both programs begins in the Summer I term (mid-May).
Nurse Anesthesia applicants:
Students may only begin their studies in the Summer I term (mid-May) and may only study on a full time basis.

Since some programs may have specific application deadlines, students are advised to discuss due dates with the program director of their selected program. For information about application procedures, financial assistance deadlines and specific program information, contact the Office of Enrollment Management at msnadmissions@nursing.upenn.edu.

Doctoral Program: The completed application is due by December 17, 2007 for September 2008 consideration.

Applicants to the MSN/PhD Program must submit all application materials by November 1, 2007 in order to receive their Master's decision prior to the start of the Doctoral application review process in December.

The deadline for international doctoral applicants is December 17, 2007.  **International applicants, please submit your application materials at least six weeks before the deadline to ensure their arrival in time to be reviewed for September 2008 consideration.  Please contact the Office of Enrollment Management at: msnadmissions@nursing.upenn.edu, to inform us of any known delays.

Interviews
MSN and Post-Master's Applicants

Interviews are required for most programs. Once your application is complete, you will be contacted by the program director/faculty to arrange an interview.

Doctoral Applicants
After the initial review of all completed applications in December, the Doctoral Admissions Committee will invite qualified applicants to interview in February.

International Candidates
As an international applicant, you should consider the following during your application process:

•               In order to help facilitate the admissions and visa processing timelines required for applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, we strongly suggest that international applicants submit a completed application for admission six months to a year prior to the start of classes.

•               Nonnative English-speakers are required to submit TOEFL scores (no more than two years old) and GRE scores (no more than five years old) in order to be considered for admissions to all programs.

•               Applicants who have completed any part of their college education in a foreign country must submit transcripts that have been evaluated by a credentialing service such as World Education Services (www.wes.org) or the Commissions on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (www.cgfns.org).

•               International applicants are expected to disclose and maintain a valid email address or fax number throughout the application and pre-matriculation process to help facilitate communication.

•               MSN and Post-MSN candidates will need to demonstrate the ability to cover tuition and living costs during their stay in the U.S.

•               Doctoral students are fully funded for the first four years of study by the University of Pennsylvania.

•               Pending the results of on-site tests at the university, all applicants whose native language is not English may be required to enroll in special English classes for Nursing students designed to facilitate one's academic work and enhance one's clinical experience.
