African American Scholarship Opportunities

A list of scholarship opportunities follows; please contact the organization at the address (or phone number listed if available) for each to obtain a current application and application deadlines for upcoming awards:

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarships Awarded by most of the 700 local sorority chapters to high school students in their communities, many established primarily or exclusively for black women. Contact Alpha Kappa Alpha, 5656 S. Stony Island Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637.

  • American Nurses Association Awarded to minority students who demonstrate commitment to nursing career related to ethnic minority health. Contact ANA Minority Nursing Director, 1030 15th Street NW, Suite 716, Washington, DC 20005.

  • Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program Assists bachelor degree seeking students to continue their education and receive commissions in the Navy following graduation. Contact US Navy Education & Training Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL 32509.

  • Breakthrough to Nursing Scholarships for Ethnic People of Color Assistance for undergraduate students preparing for nursing careers who demonstrate financial need. January deadline. Contact National Student Nurses’ Association, 555 W. 57th Street, Suite 1327, New York, NY 10019 / (212) 581-2215.

  • Hallie Q. Brown Scholarship Fund Assists Black American and minority university students who demonstrate financial need. Candidates do not apply directly, but are nominated by a member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. March deadline for awards presented in even numbered years.   • Herbert Lehman Scholarships for African American Students Assistance for students attending colleges or universities where African American students are significantly under represented.   • Stanley E. Jackson Scholarship Award given to gifted disabled minority students. January deadline. Contact the Foundation for Exceptional Children, 1920 Association Drive, Reston, VA 22091 (include stamped, self-addressed envelope).
