Doctoral Student Funding

The University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing is committed to fully funding all full-time doctoral students for four years.  Each full time doctoral student receives a stipend, funding for all required course work and individual health insurance.  Currently the minimum stipend is $19,600 for September-May. Students often receive their funding through teaching and research participation. All doctoral students will complete a one semester research residency and one semester teaching residency to enhance socialization in both of these roles. Each individual student, with the help of his or her advisor/chairperson, will identify the semester during which they wish to complete their research residency and teaching residencies. Activities that may occur during these residencies include the following:

Research Residencies

  • Research assistant
  • T32 grant fellow
  • Preparing an individual NRSA
  • Faculty research, including database publications
  • Doctoral and Post Doctoral Seminars
  • Faculty Seminar Series
  • Seminars throughout the University that are research based.

Teaching Residencies

  • Teaching assistant.
  • Faculty teaching projects
  • Coursework in teaching such as Nurs600 or Nurs601
