BSN Second Degree Samples Plans of Study

RN RETURN INFORMATION SHEET

The RN Return options in the BSN Second Degree and BSN/MSN Programs at the University of Pennsylvania are designed to reflect the previous academic and clinical accomplishments of Registered Nurses who have decided to continue their Nursing studies. An individualized Plan of Study will be determined after evaluation of transcripts from your previous School of Nursing and any other colleges or universities attended, as well as EXCELSIOR COLLEGE EXAMINATION scores. Transfer credits will be applied according to University and School of Nursing policies.

Returning RNs investigating educational options are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Office of Enrollment Management. This session will allow us to address questions regarding your academic profile, review transcripts for eligible course work, discuss strategies for completing Excelsior Examinations, draft a tentative Individualized Plan of Study based upon professional and personal needs, and develop strategies for educational and career planning.

BSN DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

An individualized plan of study will follow appropriate course sequencing and fulfillment of pre/co-requisites according to school policies for both the undergraduate and graduate programs.  All RN Return students must complete 20 course units at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing to be eligible to receive the BSN degree.

1) LIBERAL ARTS - The liberal arts component at the University of Pennsylvania is fulfilled by The General Requirement.  RNs with a bachelor’s degree in another field will have the following liberal arts components waived.

The General Requirement:  Sectors I – IV [cu = course unit(s); 1 cu is equivalent to a 3 or 4 credit course]

Sector I  Society 1 cu
Sector II History and Tradition 2 cu
Sector III Arts and Letters 1 cu
Sector IV Formal Reasoning and Analysis 1 cu
  One Free Elective 1 cu

* All other sectors are fulfilled by the Nursing curriculum. Only one course unit of History and tradition can be taken pass/fail. All other required sectors must be taken for a grade.

The Foreign Language Requirement

Every student in the School of Nursing must attain Level IV proficiency (expected after four semesters) in a foreign language. Students may satisfy the Language Requirement in a number of ways:

·         By obtaining a passing grade after four units of study (or the equivalent).

·         By exemption from the Language Requirement (before beginning language study at Penn) as a result of achieving the required        score on any of the following (for bilingual students, a special test given by the appropriate department):

        The Advanced Placement Test

The SAT II (650 or above exempts students from the Language Requirement)

A University of Pennsylvania departmental placement test. All students who have studied a language and wish to continue must either have taken the SAT. II exam or take a placement test at Penn to determine their level of study.

This option should be considered under the guidance/approval of the appropriate faculty member if review by the Office of Transfer Credit is inconclusive.

N40         Principles of General & Organic Chemistry
N54         Nutrition

5) LENGTH and TRANSFERABLE  COURSES

Optimally, RNs enrolled as full-time BSN students should be able to complete the program in approximately two calendar years.

Optimally, RNs enrolled as full time BSN/MSN students should complete the entire program in approximately three calendar years. MSN programs that are longer than one year will require additional time. MSN programs requiring nursing experience may require additional time, depending on your experience.
