BSN Second Degree Samples Plans of Study

 For Applicants Who Hold an Undergraduate Degree in a Non-Nursing Discipline
 
Please review the following sample plans of study: Option I is a more accelerated program for those who have completed certain courses, Option II is for those who have little related coursework. Please see your Accelerated Program Prerequisites list for details. Each plan includes a 12 course unit waiver for Liberal Arts (the equivalent to 36-48 credits).
 

OPTION I – SUMMER CLINICAL SEQUENCE
 
This Plan of Study is contingent upon the successful transfer of the following courses and may need approval from the School of Nursing to begin the summer clinical sequence. (see Accelerated Program Prerequisites for details on transferring this coursework): N40-Principles of General and Organic Chemistry; N42- An Introduction to Microbiology and Human Biochemistry- (which encompasses N41 and Bio175) N41 - An Introduction  to Organic & Biological Chemistry and Molecular Genetics, Bio 175 Principles of  Microbiology;  N131 & N132 - Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II; N230 - Introduction to Statistics, N54 - Principles of Human Nutrition; N51 - Human Development; N330 - Health Care Ethics. If you have taken all of these but Health Care Ethics, you may still be eligible.  If unable to start the clinical sequence in the (Nursing 50, 104, and 106) in the summer, you may be eligible to begin the BSN clinical sequence in the fall (this program will take 2 ½ years to complete) (see Option II Sample Plan of Study).

OPTION II – FALL CLINICAL SEQUENCE
 
*Option II candidates MUST complete the equivalent of N040 (two semesters of Introductory Chemistry with labs); and, N041 (two semesters of Introductory Biology with labs) and Bio175 (one semester of Microbiology with lab)  OR N42-( which encompasses both N41 and Bio175) by September, 2004.  If you will have completed Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II w/labs, but not Chemistry and Biology I and II w/labs, please contact our office. If you have taken none of these at the time of application, you are encouraged to take an Intro Chemistry or Intro Biology course during the admissions cycle so that your strength in lab sciences can be evaluated. Both Option I and II includes 12 course unit waiver for Liberal Arts (the equivalent of 36-48 credits).

Comments: This is a sample. Individual plans of study will be reviewed and approved upon acceptance to the program.
 
· Progression in program contingent upon meeting academic policies.
· Plan of study and graduation dates may change to accommodate changes in the curriculum. There is no guarantee that courses will be offered as stated.
· Twenty course units must be completed at Penn to receive a BSN.
· N40 & N41/42 are prerequisites for N104 (Option II candidates – see * on reverse)
· Nursing 200 level clinical courses  Fall and Spring only!
· Plan of study contingent upon approval of Undergraduate Advisor.
· Plan of study should be updated biannually during preregistration periods with assigned advisor.
· Elective requirements - there is one elective course required for the BSN. Students may take one undergraduate nursing course or one graduate nursing (500 level non-clinical) elective to fulfill the requirement.

TRANSFER CREDITS
 
· Official transfer credit is done on an individual basis, through the Office of Transfer Admissions, only after admission to the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing faculty who teach specific courses will review course work to determine transferability.
