PostDoctoral Program in Nursing Sleep Research

The aim of this two-year fellowship program is to advance the training of nurse scientists in the area of sleep research. The program is under the direction of Terri Weaver, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN and Ann Rogers, PhD. In addition to receiving training in sleep medicine and circadian rhythms, trainees will also select from one of three areas of concentration: Outcomes Research in Sleep Disorders, Sleep and Aging, and Sleep in Medical and Psychiatric Illness. The curriculum is designed to broaden the trainee’s knowledge of sleep and to enable him/her to apply this knowledge in their area of concentration. Moreover, course work is designed to enhance the skills of trainees in statistics as well as other areas of interest or need. Trainees will participate in scientific discussions, seminars, journal clubs and oral presentations of scientific work.

Each postdoctoral trainee will have an individualized program tailored to his or her need. In addition to course work, each student will participate in ongoing research conducted by internationally renowned faculty at the School of Nursing as well as the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology and/or School of Nursing. For example, trainees may participate in secondary analysis of data, manuscript preparation, presentations of research, development of spin-off studies, and writing of grant applications and progress reports. Postdoctoral trainees will participate in a weekly fellowship seminar series at the School of Nursing designed to provide a critical scholarly environment in which trainees can develop ideas, share ongoing work in progress and learn how to engage in productive scholarly critiques. Additionally, substantive content on how to establish and maintain a research career will be addressed, as will content on all aspects of managing a research project including complementary agenda building, communicating with research team members, budget management, ethical conduct of research, identifying resources to facilitate the conduct of research, leveraging research resources, data management, data analysis, and dissemination of findings, and informing health policy and clinical practice with research findings.

This institutional postdoctoral fellowship (T32 HL07953) is jointly funded by the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the Institute for Nursing Research. Interested applicants should send their Curriculum Vitae or:
