Guidelines for Current and Prospective Doctoral Students Considering the PhD in Nursing/Masters in Business Administration Dual Degree Program


Overview
The dual degree Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and the Master of Business Administration joins the resources of the School of Nursing and the University’s Health Care Management Program at The Wharton School. Emphasis is placed on the synthesis and integration of nursing and management knowledge, skills, techniques, and values. Graduates of these programs assume nurse administrative roles and executive positions in a variety of health care organizations.

Basic Requirements
Students must be admitted to the School of Nursing doctoral program and the Wharton School. The Wharton School’s admission requirements are outlined in their school’s catalog. The following information applies to the Ph.D. program.

Admissions Criteria

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree
  • Current professional nursing licensure in one of the 50 states or your country of origin
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test score
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score if applicable
  • Transcripts from all schools, colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Essays
  • Interview with faculty

Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted once a year in December for the fall semester, which starts in September. (December 17, 2007 is the deadline for the Fall 2008 semester)

Length of Program
A maximum of seven calendar years is allowed for completion of the work for the Ph.D. degree. This period begins with the initial graduate course following admission.

Course of Study
The curriculum is built around a flexible, four-part structure comprising a clinical field, a required core, a concentration of courses designed to support the dissertation, and the doctoral dissertation.

Examinations
The student’s progress in meeting the requirements for the Ph.D. degree is evaluated through a series of examinations that includes the qualifying and preliminary examinations.
